I'm looking for ways to improve our seed processing capability. We've done a lot by hand - jumping on bags of pods, using sieves from the op shop, blowing until we get out of breath, using a hair dryer on the cool setting, etc. But we're starting to talk about working with some local market gardeners. How do you deal with bigger quantities?
We have built a little winnowing system based on the https://www.realseeds.co.uk/seedcleaner.html. It works well. But is noisy and a bit of a pain to use as it is fiddly to clean out between each batch. It obviously doesn't do any threshing or otherwise breaking seed out of pods or separating it from plant material. But it is pretty good for using after you've jumped on your bags of seed material and then sieved out most of the sticks and chaff. Using it isn't a social activity as you can't chat while using it because it is too noisy. Our group tends to socialise a lot while we're working so this machine gets isolated off on it's own and nobody really wants to do that job.
Any other approaches people are using? Any advice (apart from finding a quieter vacuum cleaner to run the winnowing machine )?
We're particularly looking for ways to improve the threshing process as it currently consumes quite a lot of volunteer time doing it by hand.
Thanks in advance.
