Peruvian traveller – Reistomate

Peruvian Traveller is a very old variety. It was believed to have been selected over time by locals in the Andes. It is made up of a cluster of smaller fruits stuck together. You pull each segment apart and eat one at a time as there is a fairly firm slightly dry separation webbing between sections that stop it from leaking juice. -so you can pop it back in your pocket for later.

This is also know in German as Reistomate – “Traveller Tomato” (“reise” is German for “travel” or “journey”).

The bright red fruit have a distinctive good strong pleasing ‘classic’ acid tomato flavour.

The fruit usually grow to around 70mm.

The vine is an indeterminate and will grow to around 3m or more even in a temperate cool climate.

In warmer areas they will reseed very easily if left to drop fruit. But they are hardy down to about 5c and will continue to grow and fruit late into the Autumn season.
