The November 2025 National Seed Saving Zoom was an open discussion about seed saving from biennials. Growers in Australia do not have to deal with frozen ground and feet of snow. Our seasons are also at different times, so our winter is across the middle of the year, rather than between two years. For these reasons Australian growers are often confused by available seed saving information, particularly for biennials, as most of it comes from the Northern hemisphere. This session tried to demystify the issues for Australian growers.
Our discussion focused on the most common biennial food plants that we’re saving for seed. More information about them can be found in the resources section of this site or by following these links: Carrots, Beetroots & Silverbeet, Parsnip, Parsley, Cabbarge, Broccoli, Kale and friends, and leeks. Onions are a special case, so we did not spend much time on them.
